Morin Khuur Ensemble

The Morin Khuur Ensemble, a group deeply embedded in Mongolian cultural heritage, was honored with the prestigious “Order of Chinggis Khaan” in 2023. This distinction, the highest state decoration in Mongolia, was awarded to the ensemble for their extraordinary contributions to preserving and promoting Mongolian culture, particularly the Morin Khuur, also known as the Horsehead Fiddle—an instrument that symbolizes the spirit of the Mongolian people.

Established in 1992 by the Mongolian government, the Morin Khuur Ensemble has been pivotal in reviving and promoting Mongolian cultural traditions, both at home and on the global stage. Over the past three decades, the ensemble has built a rich repertoire that includes traditional Mongolian pieces as well as Western and Eastern works. They have staged over 5,000 full-length concerts in Mongolia and more than 600 performances across 20 countries worldwide, sharing the unique sound of the Morin Khuur with international audiences.

The Morin Khuur, a two-stringed bowed instrument often decorated with a carved horse’s head, is a powerful symbol of Mongolia’s nomadic heritage and spiritual connection with the steppe. The ensemble’s performances evoke the vast landscapes and nomadic lifestyle of Mongolia, captivating audiences through hauntingly beautiful melodies that resonate with the cultural legacy of the Mongolian people. Through their dedication and artistry, the Morin Khuur Ensemble has preserved this integral part of Mongolia’s heritage and passed it on to future generations.

In conferring the “Order of Chinggis Khaan,” President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa recognized the ensemble’s contributions not only to reviving national culture but also to enhancing Mongolia’s international reputation. The award reflects the ensemble’s role as a cultural envoy of Mongolia, bringing the sounds of the Mongolian steppe to the world and fostering a deeper appreciation of Mongolian cultural values and traditions.

The Morin Khuur Ensemble’s achievements are a testament to their commitment to preserving and promoting the Morin Khuur tradition. Their success is not only a source of pride for Mongolia but also a celebration of the power of music to connect cultures and uplift the human spirit. As they continue their mission, the ensemble remains dedicated to strengthening their skills, expanding their reach, and ensuring that the rich cultural heritage of Mongolia thrives in the modern world.
